The 1st annual NLRA Canadian
Classic Late Model Invitational is now officially on
the schedule for Saturday, September 8th
at the Red River Co-op Speedway in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The Canadian Classic will serve as the final event
on the 2007 schedule for the NLRA Late Model series
and will cap off a very lucrative weekend along the Red River. This event, coupled with the $9,200 to win John
Seitz Memorial event at the River Cities Speedway in
Grand Forks, ND
the preceding two nights could see one Late Model
driver walk away with nearly $15,000 over the course
of the weekend.
The Canadian Classic will replace the regular
season ending NLRA event that has been held in
Winnipeg
over the past few seasons and will be held in memory
of a long time race fan/pit guy Murray Moorhead.
Murray was 55 years old when he was
killed in September of ‘06 in a motorcycle accident
on the way to watch drag racing in
Gimli,
Manitoba. He loved his Harley but
he loved auto racing as well.
Murray grew up watching racing in
Thunder Bay,
Ontario when he was a kid. Murray helped Dave
Tyrchniewicz on his race cars since he started
racing in 1997 in a Super Stock and for the last 4
years with his Late Model.
Murray
was always at the track on Thursday nights in Winnipeg. He did not get to travel much to the
races on the weekends but he was the only reason
Turk could because Murray ran Turk’s business
when he was gone out of town racing.
Murray
never missed a race in
Winnipeg
when Turk was racing there and he even planned his
holidays around Turk’s racing schedule.
This event will feature a complete program of
NLRA Late Models as well as a regular program for
WISSOTA Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks, Super
Trucks and Street Stocks, so fans will be
entertained with a wide variety of on-track action.
Tyrchniewicz, from nearby
St. Andrews, Manitoba and pilot of the #u1 Late Model, has
been instrumental in putting this event together.
Turk said “This race means a lot to me because
I don’t think I ever would have gotten the chance to
race without all the help
Murray
has given me over the years and I know how much he
liked Late Model racing in particular. I think a
race in his honor is a fitting tribute to the man.
It’s going to be a really tough weekend with John’s
deal in Grand Forks
(at River Cities Speedway) and Murray’s deal here. They were both great men
who I am honored to consider both of them great
friends.”Tyrchniewicz
FYE Motorsports Owner Chris Stepan has been
hired to assist in the promotion of this event and
will also serve as the event’s Late Model announcer
come September. Stepan said “When Turk called and
asked if he could hire me to assist in the promotion
and success of this event, I was happy to. This
weekend is going to be a difficult but great one
with the Memorial for John (Seitz) in Grand Forks on
Thursday and Friday night and then this event on
Saturday night just an hour and ½ up the road. We
should see a huge number of Late Model teams compete
at both of these events and hopefully the fans come
out to support both events as well. It is not very
often that our local Late Model teams have the
opportunity to win nearly $15,000 in the course of a
single weekend and to run two events as memorials to
such great individuals.”
Details of this event include: The Late Model
portion of the event will pay $5,000 to win and $500
just to start the main event (all funds in US currency).
NLRA series rules will apply, which will allow for 2
NLRA provisionals to start the main event. Passing
points will be used to determine the starting lineup
for the Late Model main event. The 2007 NLRA Late
Model Series champion will also be crowned at the
conclusion of the feature event. NLRA members will
earn $200 for non-qualifiers, while non-NLRA members
will take home a non-qualifier check for $125. This
event will be WISSOTA sanctioned and all WISSOTA
rules will apply. Draw cut-off will be at 2pm with
hot laps at 2:30pm and racing to being at 3pm. The
feature event will start 24 cars and will be
40-laps. The Late Model car entry fee will be $75
with pit passes being $25. The rain date for this
event should it be necessary will be Sunday,
September 9th at 2pm. For more
